The way the squid mate is something else. Little is known about the details but...
– Amorous Squid Seeks Partner: Any Sex Will Do, New York Times. I missed this when @CoveringDelta tweeted it last month, so I’m ashamed I let the term “rocket sperm” go unnoticed for so long.

many species have evolved beyond heterosexual reproduction (or never even needed it to begin with). i love isabella’s approach to explaining this fact, because it also emphasizes our need to question what we may consider to be truths about the natural world.

me: Hey, do you know how birds have sex?
Matt: Uhhh… no.
me: Do they mount each other?
Matt: I don’t know. Do they do it in the air?
me: Should we look it up?
Matt: No, it’s better not knowing like this.

A...singing...penis. →
Not the traditional type of singing, with vocal cords and such, but impressive nonetheless. The mating call of the male koala →
Click through to listen, or if you can’t, use your imagination:
One study describes the koala’s grunting as “a long series of deep, snoring inhalations and belching exhalations.” Indeed.
Scienceline goes on to say that the males usually do the bellowing and the females judge their mating options on the depth, frequency, and length of the bellows (as opposed to, y’know…other...
